Two groups are currently offered here at Small Talk. All groups are open to any child of the appropriate age who has been forensically interviewed at Small Talk and/or is a current counseling clients. Trauma education sessions are offered for parents and caregivers as well. Click the links below for additional information about each group.
Kids Can Cope! is a CBT-based relaxation and coping skills group for kids, ages 7-10. Each week covers a different emotion and coping skill, focusing primarily on worry, sadness and anger, and uses art and play therapy activities to teach kids new coping skills in a fun and engaging way. Activities include feelings charades, yoga for kids, self-esteem builders, and anger and anxiety management games. This group meets weekly on Thursdays, from 6-7pm, and runs for 8-week sessions.
Real Heroes: Teen Girl Group is designed for teen girls, ages 14-18, who have been forensically interviewed at Small Talk CAC. The 10 week group will follow a TF-CBT based curriculum. The goals for the group include an increased understanding of trauma, increased ability to regulate emotion, strengthening knowledge regarding how to deal with trauma symptoms in a healthy manner and increased recognition of personal strengths.
Supporting Your Child Through Trauma is a one hour session offered three times a month designed to educate parents and caregivers on the dynamics of trauma and provide tips on how to deal with secondary trauma and be the best support for their child in a time of great need. Topics discussed include trauma and it's impact on the brain, dealing with common trauma symptoms, and self-care.
